Situated roughly eight km away from Cat Ba town, it takes about 30 minutes to travel to the Hospital Cave by motorbike. The cave can easily be found by following the signs along the road. The three-metre wide entrance is located halfway up the mountain, meaning visitors must climb up a wooden staircase. Previously, the cave was named after Hung Son, a military general who served during the era of the Tran Dynasty. He is said to have been the first person to have discovered this cave in the 13th century. From 1963 to 1965, as the American War escalated, a field hospital was established in order to treat wounded soldiers and shelter them from attacks. The race also marks the opening day of the fishing season on the island. A total of four teams compete in the race this year. Thousands of local people and those from neighbouring provinces come to watch and cheer. The race is very special to people of the island, as it serves as a prayer to the gods to protect them at sea. The race shows the toughness of the teams due to the need for endurance, as well as their ability to work together to overcome the waves and master their boat as a group. Each team consists of a total of 31 racers. The three-km race is very intense, with rowers ferociously competing on each metre of water. Phu Long team comes first in the race.
