In response to inquiries from reporters regarding Vietnam’s stance on the actions of China and the Philippines in the Hoai An, Tri Le, and Cai Vung Reefs in the Truong Sa archipelago, Spokesperson Hang reaffirmed Vietnam’s unwavering position. She asserted that Vietnam possesses irrefutable legal grounds and historical evidence to substantiate its sovereignty over the Truong Sa islands, as governed by international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982). This convention also establishes Vietnam’s sovereignty, sovereign rights, and jurisdiction over its maritime zones. Hang emphasized that any unauthorized entry or activity on features falling within Vietnam’s sovereignty constitutes a violation of its territorial integrity. This encounter adds to a series of air and sea confrontations between the two nations, centered around disputed areas in the South China Sea. One of the most contentious features is the Scarborough Shoal, located about 200km off the Philippine coast within its exclusive economic zone (EEZ). It has been occupied by China’s coast guard for over a decade due to its rich fishing grounds and breathtaking turquoise lagoon. China’s claim to the South China Sea, including the Scarborough Shoal, is based on its interpretation of ancient maps. However, a 2016 ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration stated that China’s clai...
