The Green Revolution: Empowering Vietnam’s Sustainable Future Through Waste Sorting and Recycling

“The importance of proper waste separation cannot be overstated,” he emphasized, “when waste is effectively sorted, it can be transformed into valuable resources, giving new life to plastic bottles and reducing our environmental footprint.”

Duy Tan Recycling, a veteran in the plastics industry with 37 years of experience, embarked on a new journey in 2021. They began exploring recycling technologies and established a state-of-the-art plastic recycling plant in Vietnam.

Since its inception, the plant has made a significant impact. Hieu revealed that they have successfully collected and recycled an impressive 92,900 tonnes of plastic waste, which equates to a staggering 701 million bottles.

Looking ahead, the plant has set its sights on producing 100,000 tonnes of plastic pellets annually by 2026, with a strategic focus on enhancing their efficiency in plastic waste recovery.

Hieu proudly proclaimed, “Duy Tan Recycling is leading the charge in the circular economy revolution. We are dedicated to collecting and giving new life to plastic bottles, ensuring they don.

“Our commitment to sustainability is evident in the everyday products we help create,” Hieu continued, “from Coca-Cola and Pepsi to La Vie and Nestlé, consumers can now find an array of familiar products made with recycled plastic on supermarket shelves. This showcases the tangible impact of our efforts and the widespread adoption of recycled plastic in our daily lives.”

The engaging discussion, titled ‘Sorting Trash Properly – Trash as a Resource,’ was a highlight of the Green Vietnam Festival. The event took place over the weekend at the Youth Culture House on 4 Pham Ngoc Thach Street in District 1, attracting a curious and environmentally conscious crowd.

The festival, a two-day eco-extravaganza, showcased the latest innovations, products, and solutions from a diverse range of industries, all united by a common goal: promoting the principles of a circular economy.

Over 60 forward-thinking businesses gathered to display their green initiatives and innovations, offering a glimpse into a sustainable future.

The Green Vietnam Festival was organized as part of a long-term project initiated by Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper, in collaboration with the Packaging Recycling Organization Vietnam (PRO Vietnam) and other dedicated partners, all working together to foster a greener Vietnam.

During the discussion, Truong Thanh Thuy, project director of PRO Vietnam, shared impressive insights. In 2023, their organization successfully collected and recycled more than 14,000 tonnes of packaging, making a substantial contribution to the environment.

Thuy also revealed PRO Vietnam’s ambitious target for the current year: to collect and recycle nearly 64,000 tonnes of various packaging types, with plans for continued growth in the coming years.

Thuy emphasized the critical role of the media in raising awareness about waste separation, collection, and recycling. “When people understand the process and its impact,” she said, “they are more likely to embrace sustainable practices and make a voluntary effort to reduce their environmental footprint.”

PRO Vietnam also recognizes the challenges faced by scrap dealers in Vietnam, as the scrap business is largely informal. To address this, they are committed to improving the lives of waste pickers by providing accident insurance and scholarships for their children, as well as introducing price subsidies to boost their profit margins and encourage more effective waste collection.

Recycling is the next crucial step after collection. Thuy pointed out that while recycling technology has been available in Vietnam for years, it is often outdated, resulting in low-quality recycled products that struggle to find a market.

To address this challenge, PRO Vietnam is taking a proactive approach by researching and providing support for recycling facilities, with the goal of fostering an industry that is both formal and sustainable.
