Fire from the Earth,” a musical tribute to the city’s first Party secretary, is currently in rehearsals and will debut ahead of the 95th anniversary of the founding of the city’s first Party Committee (March 17, 1930). The Hanoi Youth Theater made the announcement on January 27, 2025.

Penned by acclaimed playwright Le Quy Hien, the musical is based on the life and revolutionary journey of Nguyen Ngoc Vu, Hanoi’s inaugural Party Secretary. Set in the tumultuous year of 1930, when the Communist Party of Vietnam was established, the narrative shines a light on Nguyen Ngoc Vu’s path of political awakening, self-sacrifice, and unwavering dedication to the cause.

“Fire from the Earth” brings to life the struggles faced by Nguyen Ngoc Vu and his fellow revolutionaries in their fight for Vietnam’s freedom. It captures their deep patriotism and unshakeable faith in a brighter future, uniting people from diverse backgrounds—intellectuals, workers, and peasants—in the shared quest for national liberation, leading up to the historic August Revolution of 1945.

As explained by Meritorious Artist Cao Ngoc Anh, the musical’s general director, the production aims to recapture a pivotal moment in Hanoi’s history, paying homage to the city’s patriotic spirit and revolutionary legacy. She emphasized the importance of imparting a message of resilience and sacrifice to younger generations, inspiring them with the stories of those who fought for national independence.

The creative team behind the musical boasts an array of renowned talents, including director Dao Duy Anh, composer Minh Dao, and National Artist Doan Bang. The lead roles are portrayed by distinguished artists, with Le Viet Anh taking on the part of Nguyen Ngoc Vu, Meritorious Artist Thanh Tam playing his mother, and Bui Trang portraying his love interest.

The set design, featuring dynamic modular elements, transports the audience to the streets and architectural landscape of early 20th-century Hanoi. The production utilizes advanced 3D mapping technology to create immersive scenes, enhancing the viewing experience and stimulating the imagination of the audience.

According to Meritorious Artist Nguyen Si Tien, director of the Youth Theater, “With our passion and creativity, we strive to innovate and produce musicals that resonate with contemporary audiences while preserving our cultural heritage.”

The world premiere of “Fire from the Earth” will take place at the Vietnam-Soviet Friendship Cultural Palace in Hanoi on March 15-16, 2025, with additional performances scheduled across the city as a tribute to the revolutionary hero, Nguyen Ngoc Vu.
