The Eternal Spring of Hanoi: A Festival of Lunar New Year Calligraphy.

The highly anticipated 2025 Spring Calligraphy Festival is set to commence on January 23 at the idyllic Ho Van (Literature Lake). This serene location, nestled within a national special heritage site in Hanoi’s Dong Da District, provides a perfect backdrop for the festival, as shared by Le Xuan Kieu, Director of the Center for Cultural and Scientific Activities at the Temple of Literature (Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam).

According to Kieu, this year’s festival boasts two prominent highlights. Firstly, the meticulous restoration of the Van Lake area, now presenting a contemporary and inviting space for visitors. Secondly, a diverse range of engaging events scheduled throughout the festival, promising to captivate attendees.

The festival will be open daily from 8 am to 10 pm, featuring 47 accomplished calligraphers who will showcase their exceptional talent. Beyond the captivating calligraphy performances, visitors can immerse themselves in a plethora of enriching cultural exhibitions.

Among the highlights is the calligraphy exhibition titled “Practical Education,” showcasing 100 calligraphy masterpieces in the ancient Vietnamese traditional Nom script and Latin letters. This exhibition promises to be a feast for the eyes and a celebration of the written word.

Additionally, the photo exhibition, “Vietnam – My Homeland,” will display 50 captivating heritage photographs, carefully curated from the Vietnam Heritage Photo Awards spanning from 2012 to 2018. This visual journey through Vietnam’s rich heritage is sure to leave a lasting impression.

Concurrently, the exhibition “Drawing a Snake” presents a unique twist by exploring the snake, the zodiac animal for the upcoming Lunar New Year. Through the fusion of tradition and modernity, 77 illustrations by 75 Vietnamese artists from the global diaspora will celebrate the symbolic significance of this creature.

The Spring Calligraphy Festival is a must-attend event for both Vietnamese and international visitors during this year’s Tet holiday.

Within the temple premises, visitors can also delve into the “Old Traces of Culture 3: Thien Quang” photo exhibition, hosted in the front hall of Thai Hoc House. This exhibition sheds light on the ancient trades of Thang Long, the former name of Hanoi, underscoring the enduring value of knowledge and culture in Vietnam’s rich history. Furthermore, “Storytelling Steles 2,” located at the Doctorate Steles House, offers a fascinating glimpse into the 82 doctorate steles and their integral role in Vietnam’s educational legacy.

In addition to these captivating exhibitions, the festival offers a plethora of cultural activities for visitors to partake in. These include a heritage education program and a reading culture room, an exhibition of traditional village handicrafts, folk games, lion dance, and mesmerizing traditional music and dance performances, such as Quan Ho, Ca Tru, Cheo, and more.

The Spring Calligraphy Festival is not just an event; it is a celebration of Vietnam’s heritage, culture, and education.
