The Capital’s Cycle Revolution: Hanoi Expands Bike-Sharing Services

Hanoi is taking strides towards a greener future with the recent approval of 49 new bicycle racks by the Hanoi People’s Committee. This initiative encourages eco-friendly travel, offering locals and visitors an effortless way to explore the city’s timeless streets while reducing their carbon footprint.

With the addition of these racks by Tri Nam Digital Transport Service JSC, the city will now boast a total of 140 convenient bicycle parking spots.

Strategically positioned along the Cat Linh – Ha Dong urban railway line and in key districts such as Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh, and Ha Dong, these new installations enhance transport options, reduce reliance on private cars, and lower emissions.

To meet the rising demand, approximately 500 more bicycles will be introduced, particularly at high-traffic stations like Thai Ha, Cat Linh, Thuong Dinh, Van Quan, Ha Dong, and Phung Khoang.

The project also considers urban areas with heavy footfall, including Le Thanh Tong Street near the University of Pharmacy, Ly Thuong Kiet Street, Hang Trong Street, and Tho Nhuom Street in the heart of Hoan Kiem District. Similarly, the Giang Vo neighborhood and Xanh Pon Hospital in Ba Dinh District, as well as residential and administrative areas in Ha Dong District, now feature additional racks.

Since its launch in August 2023, the bike-sharing scheme has witnessed impressive uptake, recording almost 700 new users daily and approximately 900 rides per day. Notably, nearly 1,000 users have subscribed to the monthly plan, reflecting a growing preference for this sustainable mode of daily commuting.

Hanoi’s public bike-sharing service gains popularity.

To access the service, users need to download the TNGo mobile app, register, and link their account to an e-wallet for payments. Each ride costs a nominal VND10,000 (US$0.3) for the first hour, with an additional VND3,000 (US$0.10) charged for every 15 minutes thereafter.

The bike-sharing program not only caters to daily commuters but also offers tourists a sustainable and low-impact way to discover the city. It seamlessly integrates with Hanoi’s public transport network, promoting a healthier and more environmentally conscious lifestyle.

“Bike-sharing is an ideal form of public transport for Hanoi,” said Do Viet Hai, Deputy Director of the Department of Construction. “It offers a non-polluting, well-connected, and health-promoting mobility solution, making it easier for residents and visitors to access bus stops and metro stations.”

Hanoi’s expansion of bike-sharing services underscores its commitment to fostering sustainable urban mobility and enhancing the quality of life for all who call the city home or visit its timeless streets.

The exhibition “Hanh Trinh Di…” or “A Journey…” by painter Nguyen Thị Thuy Huong will open on December 23 at 45 Trang Tien Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi.
